When Ocean listener and friend Kenn Shaw told me he was working on his own ManCave a couple of years ago, I knew this may quite possibly be something special. After all, those who know him have found a man who’s always brimming with electricity and enthusiasm. He approaches life with a positive attitude even though sometimes it likes to pull the sweater over your head and give you a couple of shots to the face. Last year, this half finished shrine to hockey in his back yard was broken into and dozens of irreplaceable jerseys and autographs were stolen and sold on the street for drug money. He got a handful returned and an armful of goodwill from strangers. He’s always believed if you give enough to others the universe has a way of giving back.

Like to time he arranged for the NHL to give a Sidney man his day with Lord Stanley’s Cup. He overheard Harry Taylor in a coffee shop saying that he won the Stanley Cup in 1949 with the Maple Leafs and they struck up a conversation. A couple of years later when the Cup was in Parksville visiting Howie Meeker, Kenn made a couple of phone calls and had them bring it here. They never let players in those days take the cup back to their hometown, so it was a thrill of a lifetime for Harry and his family to have his day with the the most coveted prize in hockey. When Harry passed away in 2009 Kenn made one more call, this time to the Maple Leafs. He told them that one of their own was gone so the club sent the family a large bouquet of white and blue flowers. At the next Leafs game Harry was honoured with a standing ovation. They would have never of known if it weren’t for someone caring for another. That’s Kenn and a small example of his passion for the game.

So he and about 75 others who pitched in over the past few years have built temple of hockey in his back yard. He wants to keep it a relative surprise for those he’ll invite to the grand opening in September. In the meantime, he talked to us and let me take a few pictures of one of the most creative spaces I’ve ever seen. This is a Forbes N’ Marshall exclusive sneak peak into Victoria’s newest Mancave.
