And a slightly perturbed St. Patrick’s Day to you, from my cat.

Ahhh…March…It’s claim to fame on the calendar is most decidedly St. Patrick’s Day. Here in Victoria and most of Canada, it’ll be a big day at the pubs and maybe you’ll even hit Pinterest for a green-themed potluck or something.

But it is not St.Patrick’s Day…that’s on March 17th, everyone knows that. But my iPhone calendar tells me it’s St.Patrick’s Day in Newfoundland. And it’s a holiday? I’m not sure how I missed the fact that St. Patrick’s Day is not only a great excuse to get together with friends, but it’s also a stat holiday in one corner of Canada…yep in Newfoundland (and Labrador)

There’s no better way to confirm this news from the depths of my iPhone calendar — than to call up a pub in Newfoundland. A quick search brought me to Erin’s Pub in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Martin was kind enough to answer the phone on this holiest of Irish occasions in a fine St. John’s pub…but he also answered all my rookie St. Patrick’s Day questions. Oh, big bonus — Martin was not only in working a Newfie pub but he’s fresh from Ireland….The land of St. Patrick himself.

These Youtubers take us on a quick tour of what it looks like on St. Patrick’s Day in Newfoundland:

It turns out, St. Patrick’s Day is a pretty big show in more corners of the world (outside Ireland) than you might expect. So on Thursday, or Tuesday — or whenever you feel like celebrating St. Patrick’s Day…you can enjoy the fact that you not alone, there’s someone in Newfoundland or Ireland that has beat you to it. Cheers!
