As a photographer in nearly all my spare time, I’ve always wanted to capture the Northern Lights. It’s the mother-lode of sky photography, you know? Stars with green, pink and purple splashed across the sky? Whoohoo!

There’s this really cool photography community in Victoria in light of the fact that there’s no end to our stunning scenery. From colourful multi-cultural events, street performers, angry windstorms by the sea, rhododendrons blooming by the millions. It’s endless.

So this photography community that love to capture Vancouver Island sometimes go online and post an invite to join them in a photo shoot of cool stuff like the aurora borealis. Oh, but you need to meet up by the Peninsula — at 2am. Right. Sounds like fun. But I have to…sleep, and stuff.

Finally, the opportunity landed practically right at my feet this past weekend when the sky decided to dance across BC and Alberta with the aurora borealis. Except I wasn’t at home at all, so these photos come from afar.

These northern lights were shot while visiting my mom in the Rocky Mountains. No worries about losing sleep, she lives next to a golf course with a long northward facing view from the 9th hole. Voila. My lucky day.
