Consumer Reports says stay away from romaine lettuce until U.S. and Canadian officials can get to the bottom of an E.coli outbreak.

They also are calling on the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control to do more to warn people about the issue.

58 people in the U.S. and Canada have become sick and 1 person has died. Canada’s Public Health Agency has pinpointed romaine lettuce as the cause of their cases. The CDC is still collecting information about the sickness in the U.S. and can’t recommend whether people should avoid a certain food as of yet.

Consumer Reports says they hope the CDC will follow the Canadians lead and err on the side of caution.

Cooking can usually kill E. Coli but lettuce is usually eaten raw.
