Britain and the rest of the world paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II as she was laid to rest today.  The state funeral included many royals, world leaders and dignitaries with millions of people lining the streets of London to say their final goodbye. The service took place at Westminster Abbey where Queen Elizabeth II was married in 1947 and crowned in 1953.

Queen Elizabeth’s coffin was draped in the Royal Standard with the Imperial State Crown resting on top and was taken from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey on the royal gun carriage drawn by 142 Royal Navy sailors. The same carriage was used to carry the coffins of late kings Edward VII, George V, and George VI and of Churchill.

At the request of King Charles III, the palace says the wreath contained flowers and foliage cut from the gardens of Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Highgrove House.

In a statement released ahead of the funeral, Buckingham Palace said the foliage was chosen “for its symbolism.”

The wreath included rosemary “for remembrance” and myrtle, which is “the ancient symbol of a happy marriage.” The palace noted it was cut from a plant that was grown from a sprig of myrtle in the Queen’s wedding bouquet in 1947. The wreath also contained English oak, which “symbolizes the strength of love.”

Kate Middleton honoured the Queen by wearing one of her iconic pieces of jewelry, a four-strand pearl choker that was also worn by Princess Diana.   This wasn’t the first time Kate wore the necklace, she wore it to Wedding Anniversary part for the Queen and Prince Philip in 2017 and to the funeral of Prince Philip in 2021.

The service ended with two minutes of silence followed by the national anthem and a piper’s lament, before the Queen’s coffin was taken in a procession lined by units of the armed forces in dress uniforms, as well as Mounties of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.   Members of the Royal Family walked in the procession to Wellington Arch near Buckingham Palace before her coffin was placed in a hearse and driven to Windsor Castle.   The procession to Windsor along the Long Walk, leading to the town’s castle before a committal service at St. George’s Chapel.   The Queen was laid to rest with her late husband, Prince Philip, during a private family service.
