Looking to stretch your grocery budget?  Here are a few strategies to consider when grocery shopping…

  1. Plan ahead. Make a budget and a meal plan. This will help you stay on track and only purchase the items needed.
  2. Make a list. Once you have a your meal plan, list out the items you need to purchase, make sure you check your freezer, fridge and pantry to ensure you aren’t purchasing something you already have.
  3. See what’s on sale before you go – reviewing grocery store flyers will allow you to check out the sales, allowing for a quick change in your meal plan to save you money.
  4. Get to know the layout of the grocery store – going the same route and knowing where items are will allow you to stay focused and ensure you stick to your list.
  5. Use a calculator – add up your groceries as you go, this will help you stay on budget so you avoid being surprised at the checkout.
  6. Avoid shopping when you are hungry – everything looks delicious when you shop hungry.  Plan ahead and visit the grocery store after meals/snacks.
  7. Buy in season – make your meal plan according to the season. Often fruits and vegetables that are in season are cheaper than those that are not.    You can also buy frozen or canned options too.
  8. Up high or down low –  avoid grabbing items from the middle shelf, these are normally stocked with the most expensive items.  Some of the less expensive products could be on the higher or lower shelves.
  9. Check out the reduced section – these areas are normally packed with food choices that are half the cost. It may take a little extra prepping at home (freezing etc…) but this tip could save you big at the checkout!
  10. Always inspect the best before dates – you want to ensure the expiry date gives you lots of shelf life back at home, to avoid something going bad before you had the chance to use it.
