It was like visiting an old friend this weekend. We stopped by the newly renovated Capitol 6 Theatre that’s been sitting vacant for a couple of years, after its doors reopened on Friday night. The movie theatre that once contributed to downtown Victoria’s spectacularly long lines of Cheap Tuesday movie-goers, has joined its old buddy The Odeon to revitalize the Yates Street “movie scene”.

The Capitol 6 was the first multiplex theatre in Victoria and opened in 1981. After a few years of undetermined fate for that building, and dwindling movie-goers for many years leading up to that — a new company (Regency Theatres) has made the investment to install luxury recliners in the theatre, to offer a level of comfort we haven’t seen in a movie theatre yet in Victoria.

We tried them out this weekend, and there are actually buttons for you to adjust your personal recliner. Buttons!!

Cineplex recently announced that The Odeon has fancy new recliners coming soon, so this corner of Victoria will be the comfy corner for movie-goers.

And yes — that spectacular fig tree still has its roots firmly planted on the corner of Blanshard and Yates.

It was a total throwback to walk around the theatre restored with fresh new everything — and that signature fig tree still greeting you in the lobby. See you at the movies.
